THE U-GO SCHOLARSHIP CHANGED THE TRAJECTORY OF MY LIFE.
Career: Mechanical Design Engineer
Meet Jahnavi A. Jahnavi and her younger sister sit in a compact kitchen, in a quiet town in western Andhra Pradesh, doing their homework. In the corner, their mother sews at a makeshift workstation, the only part of her tailoring business she was able to bring with her after moving away from their beloved Bengaluru (Bangalore). Their father, a barber, is doing what he can to rebuild the family finances after the forced closure of his former busy salon in Bengaluru, during the height of the Covid-19 global pandemic.
Jahnavi’s parents had always supported their daughters, prioritizing their education in the hopes of giving them better lives with careers that provide dependable income. Looking around this modest house, with its one tiny bedroom and small living space, Jahnavi can see her parents are working as hard as they can, and yet, they struggle to pay for the family’s daily needs and the girls’ school fees. She is only three years from university. If she wants to fulfill her parents’ dreams for her, she will need to find a way to help.
Taking inspiration from her industrious parents, Jahnavi launches her first business in 10th grade. Called “Wrap Your Memories”, she collaborates with local gift shops, crafting custom gift boxes for her clients. With savvy use of social media and dedication to hard work, the business is a success – she pays for all additional educational expenses for herself and her sister. A year later, she starts an event management company. “The challenge of balancing work and studies is formidable, but with the unwavering support of my parents and friends, I will persevere.”
By 12th grade, with university only a year away, it is no longer possible for Jahnavi to study and run her two businesses out of a small, shared family home. She makes the crucial decision to outsource the operations of her businesses and move into a hostel so that she can fully focus on her academics. Although concerned about her living independently, ultimately, her parents are supportive; their worries transform into pride seeing their daughter navigate her new environment with confidence. While balancing her studies and her new responsibilities of living independently, she keeps tabs on her event management company. Three friends execute the events on the ground, while Jahnavi oversees financial matters and client relations from afar. Her enterprising spirit and financial acuity continue to soar!
With university on the horizon, Jahnavi considers her options. When her school principal asks if she has ever thought about joining the Indian Air Force, she is immediately interested. Instilled with strong values of hard work and service by her parents, she sees contributing to national security and safeguarding the country’s skies as a privilege. “The Indian Air Force boasts a distinguished reputation for professionalism,” she says. “The combination of service, prestige, and dynamic professional growth makes the Indian Air Force a truly intriguing and fulfilling career choice for me.”
After secondary school, Jahnavi enrolled at Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology in Karnataka to pursue a Bachelor of Technology degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Despite a demanding course load of physics, mathematics, and engineering, she quickly found herself immersed in a field she loved. Yet financial pressures were never far from her mind. Though she continued to oversee the event management company she had built as a teenager, most of her energy was now devoted to succeeding in a rigorous engineering program.
The U-GO scholarship, in partnership with Buddy4Study, arrived at exactly the right moment. With the burden of tuition eased, Jahnavi was able to focus fully on her studies and embrace opportunities that would have otherwise been out of reach. “It was a life-changing moment for me,” she says. “It reduced a huge financial burden from my parents, and I was finally able to pay my college fees.”
As she progressed through university, Jahnavi's ambitions began to evolve. While she had once envisioned herself in the cockpit as an officer in the Indian Air Force, her studies revealed a new passion: designing the aircraft themselves. Fascinated by the science and engineering behind flight, she immersed herself in projects that stretched far beyond the classroom. Alongside her major in Aeronautical Engineering, she pursued a minor degree in Artificial Intelligence, joined aeronautics and satellite technology clubs, and became Marketing Head of her college's entrepreneurship club, where she organized one of Bengaluru's largest student innovation events.
Her hard work produced remarkable results. She published engineering research, earned recognition in national competitions, and developed a reputation as a student who was equally comfortable leading teams, solving technical problems, and thinking creatively. Yet perhaps her greatest lesson came from perseverance. When international recruiters from Japan began visiting her campus, Jahnavi applied repeatedly and faced several rejections. Rather than becoming discouraged, she refined her interview skills, learned from each setback, and continued forward.
Then came the opportunity that changed everything.
Competing against 700 applicants for a single position, Jahnavi advanced through multiple rounds of interviews to the final rounds. Eight candidates were shortlisted; she was the only woman. After eight became three, Jahnavi was awarded the job offer from Dai Ichi Dentsu Ltd. in Japan as a Mechanical Design Engineer. The position marked not only her first professional role, but also a milestone few students from her department had achieved. When she called her parents with the news, they were overcome with emotion. Years of sacrifice, uncertainty, and hard work had culminated in a moment they had scarcely dared to imagine.
Today, as she prepares to graduate and begin her career in Japan, Jahnavi is already laying the groundwork for her future. She has passed the JLPT N4 Japanese language proficiency examination and continues studying toward advanced levels before her move abroad. The same determination that once inspired a young girl to launch businesses from her family home is now preparing her for life and work in a new country.
Reflecting on her journey, Jahnavi sees a path shaped by resilience, opportunity, and the unwavering support of her family. From a modest home in Andhra Pradesh to an engineering career in Japan, her story is a powerful reminder that talent is everywhere—and with the right support, dreams can truly take flight.
